Bug Hotel

Bugs are really helpful in the garden.  I don’t use pesticides, so I need beneficial bugs to eat all the plant eating bugs in my garden.  For example ladybugs are awesome since they eat the nasty aphids.  I also need bugs to pollinate my veggies.  I would be so sad if I didn’t get any zucchini because there were no bees to pollinate it.  Sadly there aren’t that many bees in my neighborhood so I am a little concerned about how many vegetables I will harvest this year.  Since I didn’t want to have a bee hive in my yard (though the honey would have been awesome) I decided to build a bug hotel.  It’s just a box filled with all sorts of stuff that bugs would like to live in, grass, bamboo, twigs, logs.  So hopefully all the happy bugs will move in and help me with my garden.  I’m really hoping to get a bunch of mason bees.  They are like honeybees, but don’t live in hives and are even better at pollinating flowers and plants.  Hopefully they will love all the bamboo we stuck in the bug box.  I did it for them!  If I am lucky and they all move in, they should lay eggs and next year I will have even more bees to pollinate my garden.  It is a good cycle.  I can’t wait to see some move in.  🙂
