Every year (or probably more like ever 6 months) I look at all the work I’ve done in the previous year and I evaluate it.  Where was I good?  Where could I use improvement?  I always want to keep learning and getting better, and while it’s hard to realize there are places I’m not the best, it’s great because I always have something new I want to learn.  One of my projects for this year is to become much more proficient with off camera flash.  It’s a tricky combination of technical know-how, troubleshooting (because there will always be something that doesn’t want to work) and artistic vision. Last year I started working with off camera flash in conjunction with my on camera flash (meaning they would both fire at the same time.)  But this year I am trying to up my game and light my subjects with just off camera flash.  It’s a very different style than what I normally do, but I personally think that the knowledge will be so useful for receptions and anytime I’m allowed to do nighttime portraits.  Here is a photo of my husband Ryan who was kind enough to be a test subject for me while I practiced.  There is no way that this photo could have been made without off camera flash.  And that is kinda cool.  🙂
