Artichokes are one vegetable that you have to grow for more than a year before you can eat it. So last year I planted some artichokes because I wanted to try them out. They will stay alive all the way north to zone 7 (here in VA) but they don’t really like the cold so you have to protect them very well. Of course since I planted them last year we had one of our colder winters and two of my artichoke plants died. But the one I planted in the cold frame survived and is growing a bunch of artichokes this year (I’ve found 7 so far!) It’s really exciting! One is about ready to eat already!
