Getting your kids to behave for family photos

This seems to be the biggest concern parents have about family photos.  So I thought I’d share my top tips for getting your kids to behave for family photos.

  1. Realize that they won’t behave.  I know, this sounds contrary, but the fact of the matter is they won’t be perfect.  None of them ever are (I don’t care what age you are talking about)  So stop stressing over it and know that it happens.  All. The. Time.  And I’m not judging you for it.  It’s OK!
  2. Relax!  Kids are really good at noticing how their parents feel.  If you are worried and stressed out about it they probably will be too.  So relax and plan to have a good time!
  3. No matter what, don’t yell at them or lecture them about pictures.  Both leading up to picture day and during the actual shoot.  (Refer back to #1 & #2) Yelling and lecturing them about good behavior really isn’t going to change anything and it will make them less excited to be there.  Which doesn’t equal happy photos.
  4. Now I realize I just asked you to do some difficult things… so this is the easy one.  Do something fun for your photos!  What do your kids love to do?  Schedule an afternoon of doing their favorite things for your photo shoot.  How about playing in the sprinkler in the backyard on a hot summer day and then eating popsicles?  Pick something that everyone can get excited about and then talk about how much fun it is going to be to do that, and have photos taken so you can remember all the fun you had!

If you do all these things family photos will become something that everyone looks forward to!!  And you will have albums full of happy memories 🙂
